anti-psycotic meds? ? about DD&meds

My daughter, 15, started on Lamictal about a month ago. She just took her last 100mg pill and starts the 200mg tomorrow.

Since begining the Lamictal DD has been extremely short with everyone saying things like "leave me alone" "shut up" "go away" "don't touch me". The pdoc says she thinks this is beyond "normal" for a teen, especially the "shut up" all the time. I know it is not the norm for DD. DD also claims to hear voices calling her name so pdoc is thinking of putting her on an anti-psycotic med in addition to the Lamictal if things don't get better in a few weeks.

Just wondering if anyone is on the anti-psycotic and what, if any changes have you noticed. What about side effects?

Hey there...It really depends on what a/p meds your dd's pdoc chooses. A lot of kids pdoc's start with Abilify...I haven't been on that one, so I can't say...but I do know of other kids who've been on Risperdal, low dosages, and its worked pretty well. It worked well for me when I took it. I had many of the same symptoms your dd has before I went on it, as well as full blown mania, and rage issues. I too heard my name being called. I saw shadowy things as well out of the corners of my eyes. That was during really particularly bad episodes. The a/p meds really are wonderful and they kick in quick.

If I were going to medicate my 15 year old ds RIGHT THIS MINUTE, I would start with Abilify first, then Risperdal. Geodon is WAY TOO SEDATING and STRONG for kids!!! Seroquel is too, in my opinion.

Side affects tend to vary from person to person, even on the same meds. I didn't have any side affects from Rispderal, except a small weight gain, increase in apptetite.

Hang in there and keep us posted!!!

Love and Hugs,

Keli

I was irritable before I was put on Lamictal, but the med does seem to make it worse. I just was put on Zyprexa for paranoid delusions (not medication induced). I was told to watch out for weight gain and drowsiness. I have also been on Risperdal (which didn't work for me and made me very consipated) and Seroquel. Seroquel made me very drowsy as most anti-psychotics do. Hope everything works out with your daughter.
