OMG...I went to pdoc today and he really made me upset. I cried after my appointment in my car. When I told him I stopped the Abilify he just Rx'd because it was making me too tired he flipped. Then when I explained to him it was only 5mgs that was doing that to me he understood. But then, I told him I spoke with my GP and she said my kidney function test was fine in 2005, so there should be no problem starting the Lithium. He then said...How am I suppossed to help you if you won't let me. I told him I never thought I was acting like he couldn't help me or like I didn't want his help WTF!!!! I told him he was the doctor not me and he said then take what I feel will help you. I told him I am concerned about things and I check into meds before I take them. I have a right to know the side effects no matter how small or big an effect it can have on me. Oh, listen to this crap, he says I think your bipolar I. I said YOU THINK. I was already Dx'd that 4 years ago by 2 other pdocs. He said I go up and down too much for no appairent(sp?) reason...I thought...YOU THINK. I am just so p*ss*d off. I want to sream.

Tina I'm so sorry! That's a terrible way for your pdoc to treat you. We have every right to question what they are prescribing! These drugs have very extreme side effects and they can be difficult to deal with. Did you talk to him about this? I think you should definitely say something about how poorly you think he was treating you. He probably was having a bad day but that's not an excuse. You have to be careful when dealing with bipolar people ;)

Tina, I am so sorry you had to go through that with your pdoc. I think you are doing the right thing researching your medications. It's a shame that your pdoc doesn't appreciate your wanting to be an informed patient; I would think most doctors would want their patients to be more informed about their care- to me that makes you more of an equal partner in your care. Maybe he feels threatened by your knowledge- it may be a power or control issue for him. Or, maybe he was having a bad day like you said. There is still no reason for him to treat you that way. You really should write him a note or leave a message to tell him that you didn't feel comfortable with the visit and that if you are going to work together, you need to know you can voice your opinions about your care.

I hope that your arthritis is feeling better. If there is a chiropractor or massage therapist in your area, see if you can get a sample of a product called BioFreeze. It's kind of like "Icy Hot" but tends to work much better. Just a suggestion. My DH has osteoarthritis in his knees and it works great for him. I used it when I broke my wrist and radial head two years ago and it was wonderful. I use it a lot for my shoulder problems too (arthritis, bursitis, brachialplexitis, thoracic outlet syndrome). Some people find it very helpful while others don't get much relief from it.

Take a few deep breaths and relax. Maybe you could write a letter to the doctor- a vent letter that you never send- just to get the feelings out.

Hugs,
Peg

Tina, I'm so sorry...your pdoc sounds like an idiot now...sorry. I know he's good most of the time, and maybe he did just have a bad day...but every one of us has a RIGHT to say what we WILL or WILL NOT take...we have a RIGHT to research our meds and to REFUSE our meds, if they don't work, or make us feel bad. You are well within your rights. Do not back down.

If he is afraid of a patient suing him, he doesn't have much confidence in his ability to treat Bipolar apparently.

And YES YOU DO GO UP AND DOWN A LOT...but there IS a reason...dang it. BIPOLAR.

I'm sorry...but he really made a you know what of himself.

Hang in there...I hope you feel better today.

Love you,

Keli

((((((((Tina))))))) I'm sorry you had such a rotten day yesterday. And I agree with everyone else. You have every right to question and/or research the meds you are putting into your system. I am very fortunate that my tdoc referred me to my current pdoc. She's very easy to get ahold of if I need to reach her and she listens to what I have to say. If I have questions about a side effect or whatever, she'll answer it to the best of her ability. If she can't readily answer it, she will research the question until she can answer it.

I'm sorry your pdoc gave you such a

Tina,

Sounds like your doc may be one of the "old school" ones who thinks you are suppose to believe he is God and automatically follow his ORDERS without question.
