Hi Paula,

I HATED SEROQUEL!!! I have been on it and off it many times for mania...and it DID suck all the joy out of me...and it made me (in my own words) a complete and total zombie. I only take it now because I have to. I know when I have to, and its to totally knock out some mania when it gets way bad, or because I haven't slept in days!!!

Give me a narcotic or sleeping pill ANY day.

I would SOOOO talk to your friend about this side affect of this med. I know of MANY others who feel this same way.

Hugs!

I have been on and off seroquel for yrs. At one point I was taking 150mg. But now I am just down to 50mg at night. It helps with my racing thoughts and helps me get sleep. It does take a bit for me to get going in the morn but over all It have been great for me. It was origionally given to me to help slow donw the racing thoughts and it has.

Paula,

The only good part about seroquel is that it will get you to sleep at night. It takes me like two hours just to open my eyes in the morning though. And yes, I do feel like the life is sucked out of me. But I also am getting more done. I think it makes you actually function better but you just feel empty inside. That's what it's done for me, anyway. I take 100-150 mg a day.

So basically I wouldn't recommend it unless it seems like a last choice.
Hope that helps,
Meg

Paula, I have been on seroquel and it took going up to something like 350 mg (it's been a while) to have a sedating effect. It could be because I was in a mixed state and not sleeping or it could have been just a tolerance thing.

As to whether it could have adverse effects on someone who is not bipolar, I would think so. It is used on bipolars to stop racing thoughts and paranoia. Minus that while taking the med, I would certainly have your friend get a 2nd opinion. Klonopin, although again used for bipolar is what I take as a sleep aid/paranoia silencer/racing thoughts stopper. I'm also on a birrage of other meds.

So, long and short, I would suggest to your friend to get a second opinion. I hope this helps.
