some thoughts become automatic.

My kids are listening to Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood. Mr. Rogers asked "What would you do with two sticks and a rope?" And the immediate thought was "make a noose." But I'm not depressed or suicidal right now.

Is it possible that after weeks and months of thoughts triggered by emotions, that the thoughts no longer need the emotions?

Interesting concept.

I think our thoughts are products of our personal cultures. And bipolar disorder is a part of the personal culture of everyone on this board.

Yup--it's called negative thinking and most of us constantly have to fight it.

I don't mean to seem morbid but dang, what a creative answer!! I was really impressed - you must have a very creative mind - which can be a double edge sword, but still. Wow!

Thanks, I think. ;-)

Yeah, negative thoughts have been a real problem for me when depressed, but I hadn't noticed it before when in a normal state. And it's definitely not a problem when hypo.

I get paranoid or morbid thoughts when I am overwhelmed. Negative ones are just an underlying constant - a ticker tape at the bottom of my brain that I try to mostly ignore!! Ah, the little dances that we do....
