I am new hear and would like to know your opinions. I went to the doc today to be diagnosed as being depressed and looking for some help. I walked out of the office with a diagnosis of being bi-polar after only talking with this guy for less then 30 minutes. Should I get a second opinion or is it possible to be diagnosed that quickly. Thank you all I am just really not sure of all of this.

Hi Debby & welcome to our board.

It is possible to be diagnosed that quick. Pdoc's go by your symptoms and history. There is nothing wrong with getting a second opinion though. Keep posting. I look forward to getting to know you.

Debby,

Depending what you said, especially if you mentioned the classic symptoms of BP--it's entirely possible to be dx'd so quickly.

Debby,
I was dxd really quickly too. I was worried at first but the medications seem to really help, OK I actually felt a huge difference after about a month. I just look at it as getting lucky, cause some people struggle with finding out whats wrong for years. A second opinion can always help. You can also look up info on the Internet. It was nice to meet you.

Debby,

I only saw my pdoc for about that long the first time. She didn't actually tell me I was BP but put me on the meds. The actual dx was mentioned at a later visit. For me this was a second opinion. My regular doc had dx me with depression w/anxiety but he was playing musical medications and I was getting worse and worse. The BP meds immediately made things better although it took a little over a year to get them "right." I would recommend you do a little research. A second opinion never hurts either. And ask your pdoc the basis of your dx. That's my $0.02. Welcome to the board. I wish you the best of luck.
