is there anything worse? i can't take it!!!! euphoria. misery. euphoria.miseryangerhappysadCRAZYCRAZYCRAZY.
And I KNOW that topomax is most commonly used (with something else) to stop ultradian. Is that not true? I'm like 99% sure that I've read that numerous places. But my doctor won't give it to me!!!
WHY DOES HE WANT ME TO SUFFER?

I remember some years ago after I had been taking bipolar meds for several years (and gotten huge), Neurontin came on the market, which was exciting to me because this was supposed to be the first mood stabilizer and one of the first psychiatric drugs of any kind to not have weight gain as a side effect. The moment I heard about this, I immediately went to my psychiatric FNP to have her put me on it. Almost in a self-satisfied way, she said, "you could die", and then she brought up Redux as an example of a drug she thought was prescribed irresponsibly. I was disappointed, but didn't give it much thought until a few years later, when on one of my trips to the hospital they took me off Li and put me on Neurontin (the group of pdocs at this hospital were big Neurontin fans). Well guess what. It turned out to work better than any other mood stabilizer I had tried, and the only side effect I noticed was a drop in blood pressure at higher doses (I now take only 900 mgs but keep it in combination with antipsychotics and tranquilizers). It's been six years now, and I'm not dead yet;)! I later also went on Geodon because I heard it helped with weight, and that has now been my antipsychotic for about four years. The pdoc that wrote me the first script for Geodon thought it was bad that I wanted to go on it just for weight, but he wrote me the script and it has been a good drug for me.
Well, that was a long story, but my point is this. If you don't agree with your pdoc's practices, try another pdoc. You will find plenty that will try anything the patient wants as long as it is safe. I think there are some pdocs out there that have a prejudice against the non-traditional drugs that don't cause weight gain- maybe that's my imagination, but I've seen enough to wonder if there isn't something to that.

P.S. What is "ultradian cycling?" I don't believe I've heard that term before.
Meg...hon...I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN!!! I've cycled rapidly for as long as I can remember...I take Lithium 300 mgs, and Topamax (sometimes as much as 400 mgs) and it works. Keep talking to your pdoc about it. Don't stop. Its you who are suffering. Tell them you KNOW of people its helped with ultradian cycling...I can cycle 3 or 4 times in an hour when its at its worst.
Good luck and you hang in there.
Love,
Keli
Beth- ultradian is when you cycle multiple times a day. It's gotten for me to be multiple times an hour lately.
Keli- I'm determined to prove to my doctor that topomax is for ultradian. When I mentioned it he goes, "well you also know topomax is most likely to cause weight loss..?" well yes, of course, I do. Ugh. Guess I keep trying.
Hope you're both doing well. Keli how's the lithium/topomax going?
Meg
Hey Meg, did you get the email I sent you?
