Currently, I am attending SUNY at Buffalo. I don't mind naming names, particularly if my post gives them the reputation I feel they deserve...
I re-enrolled there after a two year absence. They have a counseling department for students which has a pdoc on staff. I wanted to start going there because dh and I can't really afford the copayments at my current clinic. I was told today that they would not accept me as a patient because my past records indicated my problem was too serious. (Quite frankly, I don't think I'm any more serious than the next bipolar.)
This school is a research facility, which pretty much means that they are more interested in publishing papers than educating students. I did have to miss some class due to bp two years ago, and the disability services department pretty much said that the prof didn't have to excuse me if she didn't want to (whatever happened to "reasonable accommodations?")
Among other things that make me feel they don't care: on the day of a snowstorm, they will cancel the shuttles that are very necessary to transport students between campuses, but they will not cancel class (which some of the students cannot attend without the shuttles). They also never offer enough sections of classes for everyone to take so they can graduate on time.
I don't know if I'll get anywhere, but I am looking into hiring a lawyer. I don't think this treatment is fair or ethical.
Express!
