I was on zyprexa up until this past week. Although I'm not sure if it was for the manic side of bp or bp in general. My pdoc ended up putting me on topomax while I was on the zyprexa to combat the weight gain because I gained a lot of weight in a short period of time. But the topomax helped me to drop the weight I gained and kept me from gaining anymore.

I would have to say that it did help for a good while as I was relatively stable for about a month during the time I was on it. I have a hard time with meds - for me they work for a while then stop. Others here have had more success with meds so don't get discouraged by me. Until my body rejected it it was doing what it was supposed to do. Hope this helps.

yes, i for sure agree about the weight gain and zyprexe. Does the topomax seem
to be working. My system is alot like yours the meds work for awhile and then
they just stop working. Thank you for your response.

Yeah, the topomax worked for getting rid of the weight I gained and has kept me from gaining anymore. I stopped the zyprexa last week when pdoc started me back on seroquel but she kept me on the topomax. I don't know what her next move is because the seroquel is too sedating for me. But anyway, if you're struggling with weight gain ask your doc about topomax. I'm on 50mgs a day and it seems to be doing the trick.

I used to take Zyprexa but I switched to Geodon. Less weight gain, and it works just as well.

My husband was given Zyprexa while he was in the hospital earlier this year and it was prescribed for him when he was discharged. It worked wonders at first (combined with the counselling) but then he began showing manic symptoms again after about two weeks and lost faith in the medication to do its job, either not taking it or at one point he took too many. No further hospitalization, thank God, but he chose not to follow-up with his pdoc and that was the end of that, so I don't know if an adjustment to the dosage was necessary (he's 6 ft 7 and 240lbs and has always had difficulty with any meds) or if he needed something else.

The symptoms he mentioned were sensitivity to light (he also has poor eyesight) and a dry mouth, but no others.

Note: He was also visiting his family a week after he got out of the hospital and I urged them to get him to a doctor if they noticed him getting anxious / irritable OR if they thought he was depressed. They chose not to encourage him to get medical attention and decided it was "all my fault" he was behaving this way - the fact I was 500 miles away was irrelevant. I don't know how much of this attitude sabotaged what could have been the start of a true road to wellness for him, me and my kids at that point. It's taken many more months to get him back to a pdoc and hopefully to a better life.

Bottom line is I don't think he gave the Zyprexa a "real" chance.

Best of luck!

Thank you so much, I think I will talk to my doctor about siwtching,
because you are right the weight gain. Another girl sent me a e-mail
and said she switched from zyprexa to topomax because of the weight gain
also. thanks again

Thanks for your insight! The zyprexa works well for me,
42 and just had a baby girl in may, I took the meds threw
my being pg. And, yes you being 500 miles away wasn't
his problem. But I have found when a person has a mental
illness they (and there family) love to blame someone
else. I just don't like the zyprexa because of weight
gain. also, right know I don't have a pdoc. Mine moved.
But again thank you so much.

good luck to u2

I take zyprexa, 20 mg. It seems to be helping. It used to make me tired so I could sleep but lately I've been needing to take Atavan for that. I'm also on Lamictal and Prozac. Take Care
