I don't think I ever mentioned it on this board before, but my sister, who is not biologically related to me also has bipolar, and to make matters worse for her she is also borderline. She has always been the black sheep of the family- growing up she stole, lied, and got involved in drugs. In her adult life, she went out and had five kids and because of my parents didn't want to see the kids suffer, they took care of her and them. Those kids were her meal ticket, and I think other family members (including me at times) resented that.

Right now, I feel like I really need to take her side. I called her today to ask her a favor, and she started crying almost uncontrollably. She is very depressed...at least as depressed as I have ever been. What triggered it is that one of our brothers, one who is a real jerk in general if you ask me, invited everyone in the family except her to his house for Thanksgiving dinner. My sister took our mother's recent death harder than any of us, and this only added rejection to a difficult holiday for her. My dad thinks she is over-reacting. I disagree.

I guess the way DH and I decided to deal with this is to be there for her in case she ever wants to talk. I know that I myself as a bp person will talk to anyone who will listen...and most people don't listen.

I would recommend she come to these boards, but she doesn't have internet access I think.

Even though I am bp myself I feel like I am watching helplessly. My sister might die soon. Besides the fact she has been treated for uterine cancer and emphysema (due to years of bad self care I'm sure), now she feels like killing herself too.

Express!
