My friends are mostly from work or extended family, and they are not particularly fit - maybe not unfit, but not the gym rat that I am.

Even my closest freind from the gym is someone who works there but doesn't work out regularly...

I like the comaradery of the lifters at the gym, but they are mostly late 20's-mid 30's guys and as a 55 year old woman, not a lot of common interests except working out and a love of sports so not really friends..

Most of my friends are not fit, but some are.

I wonder how that correlates with family (e.g., parents)?

While growing up, my parents did not work out.

That's a good question about family.

I can't imagine you with a weight problem...but, perhaps, that is your motivation for being fit today?

When I was younger, my mother felt that my problem was that I did

Definitely there's the motivation of gaining weight which I do too quickly. It's a constant battle.

Interesting question Jean. I would have to say that most of my friends are fit but not all. Perhaps it's because of like interests (the gym)? I can't imagine that you are the largest of your friends at a size 4P. lol just how tiny are the rest of your crowd?!

iVillage Health posted about the new study that suggests you might want to get rid of your overweight friends. According to the authors, "merely being exposed to someone overweight can result in increased food consumption...." ( You can read more here: New Study Suggests You Ditch Your Portler Pals)

So..is it true...do birds of a feather flock together?

Yikes, I can't imagine ditching overweight or unfit friends.

My group of friends is very fit. We all work out on a regular basis. We don't have time to work out together based on people's class schedules..but at least some of us are together at any time. I agree that it does motivate you when your friends are in great shape!! Plus we share fitness and nutrition tips with each other.
