New Med Question
| Thu, 01-11-2007 - 8:09pm |
My pdoc today gave me a new med for sleep problems. He said it's an a/d but that's not why I am taking it, even though it may slightly "bump" my Prozac. It's called Desyrel and it's for 50 mgs. Anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks! Kelli

Hi Kelli,
Yes, Desyrel ( Trazadone) is an a/d but not a strong one. It has properties in it that boosts the other a/d that you take. I took that many times before. It helped me but in time I needed to have it increased. I went up to 200mgs a night and then I changed to something else but it is a good med...at least it was for me. I had problems at times with my blood pressure dropping and getting light headed, so you might want to be careful with that. I hope it helps you.

Kelli,
I, like Tina, took trazodone for sleep. With all my med problems I have no idea if it worked or not unfortunately. I still have it on hand. Thinking back to when I took it, I was also on seroquel and other sleep enducing meds so I couldn't tell you what worked and what didn't or if a combination of the meds did the trick. Hopefully, for your sake, the trazodone will be effective. I know my dd17 will now take that if she allows herself the right amount of hours to sleep at night. She either takes that or geodon. But the key with her is whether or not she allows herself 7-8 hours of sleep a night which unfortunately is seldom:(
So, hopefully this will help your a/d and provide you with the added rest you need. Hang in there and keep posting.
Hugs,
Traci
I have taken Trazadone for several years and am up to 200 mg. I am also on Cymbalta (90 mg) and it doesn't interfere with the a/d properties of that; it is strictly a mild a/d. The only problem I have with Trazadone is that I have to take it almost 2 hours before I want to go to bed because it takes at least 90 minutes to work, according to my pdoc. If I'm still awake after that, there's no point in taking any more because then it will take another 2 hours to work and I have to get up at 6 a.m. in order to drive 70 miles to work.
When I'm under a lot of stress (as I am with a bph) the Trazadone won't work at all. (I'm going to see my pdoc Monday about this.) However, I've tried Lunesta and Rozerem and they didn't faze me. My pdoc won't put me on Ambien because of the Cymbalta so that's out.
I have had insomnia allo my life--can remember lying in bed all night long when I was a child. So I am happy to have the Trazadone--just get frustrated when it doesn't work.
