Any suggestions?

Does anyone have any suggestions for a "natural" way to ward off gnats and mesquito bites? This weekend was one of the worst for those nasty gnats! I have huge welts all over my body from their vicious bites! I tried lavender and peppermint oil and neither kept them away. I had to break down and use the over-the-counter bug spray! And even that didn't completely keep them off my back!

My stylist makes a hair tonic with jojoba and basil oils that not only moisturizes my hair, but keeps gnats away.

Me either Karla...it doesn't matter what I try, I get bit every time. I was also told pure vanilla works so tried that one too...nope! I don't like the scent of Avons skin so soft and strong scents give me migraines so don't even want to attempt that one. Last night when leaving work, I was only halfway between the office and my car and BAM! I got bit again! I give up and will just stay indoors when they are bad.

You are just too darn sweet, so those nasty bugs cannot resist you.
OMG Karla! That is exactly how it is for my dh and I....only the other way around! He can get bites and nothing becomes of them and they hardly even pay attention to him at all.....but ME on the other hand....the cloud of gnats and mesquitoes swarm over me and they eat me alive! AND I itch and scratch till I bleed! It's terrible!
Thank you Sharon! Dh's doctor told me yesterday to try vanilla again....we will see....if you hear of a better solution, I would love to hear of it! You are so right, I absolutely LOVE the outdoors and want to go camping again soon.
I did join the gym yesterday though and was there this morning swimming laps at 5:15 a.m.! It felt great!
I've heard teh skin-so-soft thing too but I do't like how greasy it makes my skin feel so...
NO perfume or scents (mosquitoes are drawn to scents)...
I found this page which lists several ideas for what to avoid (kind of hard to now sweat and not be hot but... HEY) and some "natural" recipes but I won't swear by their effectiveness...

Good luck - I'm interested in hearing what you find that works!
