Sheryl Crow and exercise

I just read an article about Sheryl Crow and her breast cancer story and it mentioned that she went thru a short term depression. I cannot remember if it actually said she took meds (ever) but I do remember her saying she works off her depression or negativity with continuous exercise.
I am fixing to start a major fitness program (including body building) with my gf (and I am 47)...and am wondering when I get to the point where doing all of this is as natural as breathing (again)...getting my energy back, lose weight etc.....perhaps, I was hoping, I could not take my meds any longer. Anyone researched/expereinced this had an ok from your doc for this remedy?
Thanks,

Exercise CAN definitely help with depression, but not enough to not need meds unless it's maybe a case of short-term, situational depression.
