I'm Beth, AKA Petrouchka since undergrad;
I live in Oakville, Ontario- an artsy town thirty minutes outside Toronto
I grew up in Phoenix, Arizona the youngest of four children. I still lived in Arizona until just a few years ago when I made the big move to be closer to the love of my life whom I met on the internet in 1999 (it really does work sometimes!) Gary and I married last year...and my mom died five days later, isn't life interesting? I haven't worked in a long time mostly because of immigration complications, but I teach music lessons, do wedding-type gigs on my flute and would love to find work in a music studio. I am also going back to school in the fall to finish my teaching certificate.
My life has been crappy for a long time, but as of today I have *2* bits of good news to share:
1) I have been in a deep depression for months, but for some strange reason, I woke up this morning feeling really good and have continued to feel good all day. I am hopeful that it will last. I have a deep belief in God, and I have prayed over and over again for Him to help me, and I think maybe He did.
2) Though the good ol' Canadian govt. promises healthcare to all of its citizens and residents, my health card continues to be a no-show in the mail. That means that my hubby and I have to pay out-of-pocket for most of my doctor bills when we are existing solely on his small income (and I need surgery soon on top of my bp expenses!), and that also means I don't qualify for my husband's drug benefit through his work. That all might sound bad, but I'm not finished yet. My dad, a retired engineer who, along with my deceased mother who was a chemist, made a pile of money. Neither of my parents believed in spoiling their kids, but they both considered healthcare another matter entirely. My dad knew we were struggling with healthcare bills, so he sent us a check for $2000! It arrived today! Sure, it doesn't solve all of our problems, but it sure does help:)!

3) A little bit about yourself and/or your family: I've been married for 8 1/2yrs, have 3 children; 8 1/2, 7, and 3. Was officially Dx'd May 7th. pdoc started me on Lamictal 25mg, now I'm on 50mg, next Monday I start 100mg.
4) Share some good news, even if it's just a little thing: The Lamictal is doing what it's supposed to. I'm feeling better than I've felt in a really long time. So pdoc thinks that 100mg will be my "theraputic" dose...

Hello everyone! I'm new to iVillage and am wondering if I can upload some kind of picture, first off - secondly, I'll introduce myself. I found my way here looking for a good place to meet some other people who are dealing with bipolar other than my family (haha). We have the gene in spades (I have on both sides). I am married, one year anniversary last week; two kids from a prior marriage - 10 and 14. My son is also bipolar (I) and I have bipolar (II) -- recently diagnosed last year. I live in MN, work as a nurse. I have recently left acute mental health nursing and have taken up home care nursing (day hours, but I would rather have my old job back). We have a strange dynamic in my family as mentally ill mental health professionals. (chuckle) My dad is a therapist and bipolar I, my mom (long time psych nurse) and sis (also a nurse) have unipolar depression. I am also newly 'sober' as it was decided that any alcohol I was using wasn't a good choice to medicate my depression - (duh) but hey, you know the mind in action. I am in dual recovery. I'm looking for a place to share my thoughts and be a part of a supportive network. I'm looking forward to getting to know the posters here!
My best,
Eclipse
Hey Eclipse! I have to welcome you and comment on your post! It has always been my thought that mentally ill people make the best mental health professionals, and I always secretly wished to be treated by others like me. I always figured that professionals who didn't have problems like mine at best could not truly understand, and at worst talked down to me (btw, I have a master's degree, so I equal or exceed many of them in education and don't think I should be treated as a child by any of them, even the doctors).
Good for you being in recovery, too!
