Yes, having day to day mood swings is part of the bipolar illness. Bipolar is having two poles- highs and lows. Some times we can have both feelings at the same time which is called mixed episodes.
Mania
Severe elevation is mania, whic can sometimes cause hospitalization depending one your symptoms. Sometimes delusions are a symptoms of severe mania. Sometimes in this state we can act irrational without being aware of our behavior and cause danger to ourselves or others. In a manic state you can become full of energy and feel the need for little or no sleep for days and days.
Hypomania
Milder form of mania, less severe, usually no delusion or hellucinations or very mild. May have more energy will be able to sleep for a least a few hours a night.
Depession
Feelings of hopelessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, feelings of worhtlessness, guilt, trouble sleeping, waking too early, loss of appetite or increase in appetite, suicidal thoughts.
Once you are on the right med or combo of meds these mood swings should not be as dramatic, they should not jump from high to low day to day. You should let your pdoc know about your mood swings so your meds can be adjusted to improve your illness and make life easier to cope. I know it can be a long process sometimes finding the right meds but keep your doc informed on your moods and keep a daily mood chart. It will help your pdoc know better what symptoms you are dealing with and how to treat you.
I will post some things to put on a mood chart to help you. I will post in the "let's get Motivated" folder below.
Take care and hang in there.

I understand the mood swings between hypomania and depression. But what about the inbetween times when I'm not either, I;m just plain cranky/bitchy/moody?
Hi, I am very new here. I was in the depressin support board and they suggested I come over here. what is this mood chart you are talking about?
We have recently decided that a am depressive/bipolar w/ anxiety issues. I just started taking meds end of June. Thanks for the breakdown of mania depression etc. I am definately changing daily. My husband notices a more energenic me by I am still so exhauseted. I have fallen asleep at my desk about 6 times today.

One thing that i have noticed with the moody/bitchy/cranky feeling is that it seems to
appear right after or on the tail end of a manic/hypomanic episode. That is just my own
experience, however. It is like "coming down" off the high of mania,or maybe just a sort
of mental& emotional hangover from being manic & not sleeping enough, etc...I rapid cycle
(or so says my Dr.), so i can relate to what you are saying. I hate that feeling,
especially since i have to work so hard to cover it up & put on a happy face during the
day to others lest they think that I am a total b*tch, lol. I don't really know what can
be done about this, or even what this phase is officially called...I wish I knew!
Anyway, best of luck & hope you feel better soon..

One thing, you don't have to be bipolar or have any mental illness to have days you are moody, bitchy, or cranky. Stress can cause these feelings and that is "normal" If you feel you are feeling these things all the time then there is either a med adjustment needed or some counseling needed to help you with learning to cope and learn behavior modification to help you through these tough times.
Sometimes we can get into a habit of behavior when we have are symptoms with bipolar. So when we are in that "in between" stage we can keep those same behaviors going. So that is why it is important to learn coping skills and learn how to handle ourselves when we get in those bad moods.
Maybe you can start by asking yourself what it is that is making you feel bitchy and moody. Is there something you can do to change what is going on? If not, can you let it go? If someone is upsetting you can you ask that person to stop doing what is upsetting you in away that isn't attacking the other person, like putting the "I" statements at work, example: I feel aggitated when you say or do _______, it would help me feel better if you wouldn't say or do that anymore.
Sometimes we just need to do something good for ourselves. We can sometimes get irritable when we feel we are doing all the giving and no getting. Go shopping, get a manicure, get your hair done, take a nice bubble bath, paint your toe nails...anything that you will find enjoyable and that will be taking care of you.
I know for me when I do things for myself I feel better. Also , when I ask myself what it is I am upset about or irritable about I sometimes can't figure it out and then later I find it is because I am not getting my needs met, either by myself or another person.
I hope this helps. If I can be of anymore help please ask and I will try. I am just throwing somethings out there right now.
Hang in there !
