I need planning & idea help! (mostly OT)

My BF, now fiance and soon to be husband (OMG! that is weird!) are definitely lost when it comes to the whole planning a wedding reception thing.
We will have a civil ceremony within the next 2-3 weeks and then we will start telling people we are married. :)

We will have one reception party here in Finland and another in the US. Dates for either are up in the air..but the US one will most likely be the beginning of November.
Yes, I'll be planning, hopefully with the help of my mom and stepmom, the party in the US from here.

We will be paying for this ourselves and would like to try and save as much as possible, but still have a nice party.

And now.. on to my questions:
1. What kind of places would be good to look at for the reception?
Restaurants where food is readily available? A 'hall' of some sort and have it catered?

2. Since we aren't having an actual wedding and there aren't things we "need" (since we've lived together for 7 years), we won't be doing a registry nor do we need gifts. How do we go about saying 'no gifts' or is that a bad thing to say?

3. Where do I start? LOL.

I'll post more questions here when I think of them and I'll also check out the wedding boards here at iVillage and see what those ladies can come up with too.

YES! That does get some ideas flowing!

I never would have thought of our local art museum. But now that you mention it, I did work as help for a caterer who did a reception at that museum.

Now, my homoetown is quite young..so there won't be too many 'historical' building and such..but there are some nice places. And you re-reminded me that there is another small(er) town near by (30min) that has some very beautiful retaurants and such.

I guess the thing is to talk to my mom and stepmom once we share the news with them and ask for their ideas also. They are living there and can go look and know better what is still around or new.

Thanks Hanna!
Well, we'll have the "real" celebration/reception at the beginning of October here in Finland.. if you can manage then it would be sweet. :) But I knowh ow it is with traveling and expenses. We're going to be doing tons of spending pretty soon.. starting with rings. :)
(I think Mika is liking the more expensive rings than what I was looking at....but he wants to be happy with what he gets, which is very nice to hear.)

I had to think for a sec where Åbo (Turku) was.. Heheh.

I understand the money situation.. we're going to be strapped after our events..and we're not spending tons of money on our celebrations either! I can't believe the amount some people spend on their weddings.. I know it is your special day and a fairy tale wedding for some..but OMG! I would rather buy a house or holiday or something!
