That, like how many kids you have, is entirely your family's choice. I'm an only, and my mom didn't work til I went to high school (she worked prior to having me for many years). She was very active in my school's PTA and was a very dedicated girl scout leader (I was in from 2nd-9th grade and she was always our leader) I worked PT til my ds was 12, then went back FT. That gave me time to keep my foot in my career, volunteer at ds's grade school, and be a cub/boy scout leader from 2nd grade-soph year when he made Eagle. This is what worked for each of us. What works for you and your family is your choice - people will always stick their nose in where it doesn't belong!
I have two, but I think it's definitely a lot more work once they're in school. I put in a lot of volunteer hours, which is nice because you get to know the teachers and get to know the other kids a bit. How does your son like preschool?
Also late replying. I've been away from the board for a bit. I'm also a SAHM. But, then again, we've made the choice to homeschool, so I'm definitely BUSY! But, when my DD was in public school for Kindergarten, I volunteered ALL THE TIME. I was there many days of the week helping in the library, helping in the classroom, helping with events. I personally like the idea of being home for my DD (even if she was in school all day). Like others have said...it's none of anyone else's business...you and your DH make the choices of what works for your family and go with it. Don't let others get you down! :) I know I get plenty of those "looks" because of our homeschooling choice. I try not to let it bother me...and the more it happens, the thicker my skin seems to get.

My son is 12 and I'm a SAHM, so no, I don't think it's '"weird".
I know I'm kind of late in responding, but I'm also a SAHM.
