New census data shows that almost half of all American women of childbearing age are not having kids.

I know this has been in the news quite a bit lately, but does "almost half" seem accurate?

I'm always a little leary of articles like this because they have such a broad definition of "childfree".
Like bagpipe_mouse, I take these studies with a grain of salt. Not only is the childfree moniker a broad one but it also encompasses people on either side of the choice issue; those who choose the childfree lifestyle and those who consider themselves child*less* and are struggling with infertility.
I also don't see my career as having much bearing on my choice to remain childfree. My choice has more to do with my lifestyle than what I do for 40 hours a week.
I do know a few more people who are childfree than I encountered as a child. Of course, I've also left the small town I grew up in and the Catholic high school I was educated in and have met people in a much broader representation of society.
