I've never really liked to drink chianti, only cook with it. However, DH and I found an inexpensive chianti from the Tiziano vineyard in Prato, Italy, in the Tuscan region. My favorite part of Italy, apart from the coastline (either side, doesn't matter).
Runs around $7-8/bottle out here. Not too bad. Dry, very pleasant. Doesn't leave that nasty dusty taste in your mouth like some chianti.
Good accompaniments: sharp cheddar, strong cheese like blue, roquefort or stilton. Grilled meats.
Great in stew! I added some to a lamb stew and it was wonderful.
