Do you often 'kick up' things from your pantry?

We loved home-canned green beans. We serve them

unadorned. I've been known to add a few sauteed

mushrooms but that doesn't work for company because

we have anti-mushroom friends and relatives.

My mom served green beans with mushroom soup for

company. (I consider the canned fried onions completely

optional.) We still call them Berge beans after the pastor

we served them to, 25 years ago.

I rarely use the bottled spaghetti sauce; my homemade

is just so excellent. I make a huge batch, sometimes

I freeze part. Sauted onions, garlic, and equal parts

basil, thyme and oregano improve a canned sauce.

And speaking of mushrooms. I live in a place that's supposed

to get a whopping 8 inches of rain a year. We're way beyond

that, so much so that I have a couple kinds of mushroom

springing up in my backyard. dd is 6 and I'd rather not have

her experimenting so I have to make frequent forays to get

rid of them.
