Yeah, its crazy. We aren't offering tomatoes in our condiment bar at work, because of the price (I assume) and the quality (the reason given to the customers). I do have to admit the quality was HORRIBLE before the big wigs told us not to put them out any more.
I think your idea is very good, i have a back yard, i can grow them with myself. I love eating tomatos very much, but now the price is a liitle expensive.
I sometimes feel sorry for myself because we don't have those big fresh veggie stands that they have in other places but now I am only 20 miles away from the tomato hydorponic greenhouses... Now they aren't garden but they are I would say 75% better than store bought. They smell and taste like tomatoes not some red filler for a salad...lol
We have to go from about Nov. To March without them. They also have this year cherry tomatoes that I roasted some the other day....Oh, My...... and they have English cukes too.
