What are your thoughts on downloading free music online vs. purchasing albums?

Downloading just simply to build up a music collection, I don't care for (free download, not pay-per-download). But, a download (even free) for a "research" type aspect - want to hear a few songs by a new artist or new album before purchasing - is different. We've downloaded before, didn't like the music, deleted it from our collection. Other times, we've loved what we heard and went out and bought the album (more than once, we've bought multiple copies so we could have one in the house, one in the car, etc). When used properly, downloading can benefit everyone involved.

(who thinks most of the download wars could disappear if the record companies would just price the CD lower!)

I personally think it is stealing. How wealthy the artists and music companies are is irrelevant IMO. They produced a product and deserve to be paid for it.

Yes, cd's are expensive, but I never pay more than $10 for one - I go to discount stores or the used cd stores, etc. No artist is worth more than that to me! LOL!

I do like napster now that you can pay $.99 for one song...my beef with cd's is that I'd buy a whole cd for like 1 or 2 songs and I never liked the rest! So, I am glad now that you can buy individual songs...I prefer a "mix" of music rather than listening to one particular cd the whole time driving, or whatever.

I'm torn. I (of course) want to download free music - and I have in the past downloaded quite a bit (friend had a T1 line).

I think the major players make plenty via other venues (concerts, tshirts, paraphanelia, endorsments by pepsi, nike whatever)

Then there are the 'little guys' who are just trying to make a living making music.

I'm a big fat fence sitter thats what I am!

I dont have a computer setup for downloading and burning to a CD but a friend of mine used to do it for me till the big broo-haha. I wish there was a service that would do it for me at a cost. If I could select the songs I want I would pay for a CD to be made and sent to me - is there such a thing ? Because like you, I dont like paying $15 for a CD with only 1 or 2 songs I like - it isnt fair to the consumer but someone is getting rich off it >:(

It's not "cheap" but it's a lot more convenient - napster.com charges 99 cents per song. YOu can also buy the whole CD, I think for only $10 or something like that. I like that I can get the individual songs though.

I have never down loaded any music mostly because I do not have a clue how to do it. (LOL) I also agree with everyone on the cost of a CD being pretty high and also agree I usually like only 1 or 2 songs on the darn thing. I listen to the music station on our cable tv most of the time - love the selections and really love the Smooth Jazz station. I put on every TV in the house and just dance all around!

My thoughts - I do not consider it stealing, I am not taking anything from anyone.. I pay $45.95 a month for internet access - I can look at what I want - I can download things that are download-able.

If I want to look at porn, that is what I am paying to be able to do, the same with coloring pages I print off to color.. The website that allows music is for us to use. The same with the ABC news videos.

My family buys lots of CDS and for that matter movies too.

So is this the same as taking a VCR tape and putting it into your vcr and taping Dr. Phil, The Guiding Light or a NASCAR race - Am I stealing?
