My Anxiety Update

Hey everyone,

I haven't seen too many postings lately so I figured I'd try to post about life lately and see how you all are doing. Volunteering is good but hard. School is going well but it has been a challenge. Anxiety is better but still rears it's ugly head every now and then.Saw the doc who recommended I should up up my dosage. I told her it felt like an elephants being taken off my shoulders every time I finished volunteering. She said if this doesn't help she wants to try different medicines. I met a girl who recommended Topamax and Anafranil. Doc said both were good for treating anxiety and ocd. I have taken the Topamax road and cannot recall the side effects but am a little hesistant about getting off Zoloft. Anyways, that is my life this week. How is everyone else doing?

Hi Nawleansdarlin,

You have described my bad anxiety moments perfectly. Whenever I have a bad attack phobias appear within minutes yet lasts weeks. It is ironic how that happens. I'm glad the meds have helped you manage the phobias better, as my Zoloft has helped me somewhat with the same concerns. I had taken Buspar with Abilify and found that the combination was pretty good. However, a new doc weaned me off and I have never had the same response to the medication. Congratulations on going to school, too! And managing kids and a home. And of course, CUM LAUDE. I am business major and sometimes I feel like I cannot read another page in my textbooks but then I think about how I have my daughter to care for and it keeps me going. As for volunteering, I am a volunteer resource specialist at a non profit and take on administrative tasks at a hospital in my city. The work feels like I have two jobs. Nothing like I imagined. But it is helping me so much to get out and interact with the world. Challenge my anxiety so when I get a job out of school it won't be so stressful (hopefully). What about you? Are you able to work or volunteer with anxiety?

If it wasn't for my son, I wouldn't have ever graduated with such a high GPA.

Wow! You have had quite a journey. You sound amazing though. I mean, despite everything, you still present a positive attitude and a drive that won't let you give up. That is inspiring. I'm sorry I don't know anyone in Dallas either or I would tell them to help you out as a reference. Give it time. You will meet some people. Have you tried looking into any groups? I think there is a site, meetup.com perhaps, that allows you to meet other people based on similar activties or interests.

I am like you when it comes to medicine. I think I am starting to prefer the medicine in exchange for "toughing it out." I wish it wasn't like that as I want to have more kids someday and I fear about medication side effects, but even my doctor says I am genetically programmed to be anxious and should be on something long term. Good for your son though. 19 can be a tough age since you're borderline adult. My panic attacks were pretty rough at that age.

So I'm guessing your degree is in pyschology? Pyschology can offer many opportunities. I know you can go into education, obviously heath care, and things like social work. I sometimes go online and look at the qualifications for different jobs. You would be surprised how many jobs don't necessarily need you to have this or that degree.

I know one day you will be able to go to graduate school! You sound very driven and determined. You can do anything you set your mind to!
