"The Talk"

Hello all.

I'm the mother of a seven (eight in May) year old boy, who has started asking how babies are made. I've managed to put him off with the "when a man and a woman love each other very much, they make a baby...now go to sleep please", but it's not the first time he's asked, and I'm sure it won't be the last.

Unfortunately, I'm now raising him by myself (his father and I are in the middle of a divorce, and he seems to enjoy not being forced to spend time with his son, and is certainly not seeing him voluntarily), so I'm very likely going to have to do The Talk by myself, whenever it has to happen, which is a whole other problem.

Anyway, what I'm wondering is, at what age have other parents taken that step with their children. I've asked my male friends when they had that discussion with their parents, and I've gotten everything from 5 or 6 (he was a very precocious child) to 12 years old.

Advice? Ideas? Stall tactics? I can't believe that my son is really ready for that conversation, but I could be in denial. Still, he asked me again last night while he was getting ready for bed, and then curled up with his stuffed fox and went to sleep. He's still a baby in my eyes, I guess.
