In one place we stayed, the owner of the condo was an artist. She had painted local flora and fauna on muslin, cut into shapes and frayed a bit around the edges and then applied that to a backing which she framed. I thought the look was really great. You could use various papers for the painting, or if you don't paint find a great picture to paste on the muslin or paper. You could also print out an image and go over it with some watercolors or acrylics and use that as the centerpoint. Actually, looking at the picture it appears the background is felt or brushed homemade

That's really neat - and inexpensive when compared to buying artwork to decorate a house.. What a talented artist too!

You wouldn't even have to be a painter if you could find a printable image.....or use your own photos! I thought it was really cool and something I'll do one of these days!
