I've noticed many businesses in my area have set up nice little smoking areas (with canopies and chairs, etc) for their smoking employees. Does this send the message that it is okay to smoke? Would it have helped you quit if there were zero smoking rules at your job?

As a non-smoker who would rather there be a smoking area for those who cannot or will not quit than to have to run that gauntlet of smokers aournd every doorway in and out of a building. So if setting up a little smoker's "cafe" is the way to clear the entries, I'm all for it (I KNOW that quitting is hard --- my Dad did it cold turkey but my Mom was never able to quit) and companies shouldn't lose valued employees because of smoking IMO).

Here's the thing with this. These are grown adults that make their own choice to smoke every time they light up. But smoker or not, they are still human beings and if a company has nice break/meal areas for non-smokers, why wouldn't they do it for smokers too? I have to agree with what Carol said.

As for the supportive factor and ease of quitting, of course it's easier to quit in a nonsmoking environment. But I have to say that the majority of quitting has to be the decision of the person quitting. If they're not 100% decided they want to quit, no amount of support or nonsmoking areas will make it easier. Just my thoughts.
