Proper running form and core strength
| Sun, 04-01-2012 - 8:53am |
I've only started trying to jog recently and I've gotten a good idea of how improtant good form is. I've noticed that when I run (unlike when I walk) I can't keep my shoulders and waist from moving. I'm wondering if this has anything to do with not having a strong core. Does anyone have any advice about how to fix this?
Welcome to running!

Hi and welcome! Congrats on getting started running. You're right: core strength and good form are definitely important. In addition to what the other poster responded, I would say don't worry about your shoulders moving. You don't want to be stiff and rigid while you're running; in fact, your back and shoulders and arms should be relaxed. Your core -- which is supporting you -- is really the only thing that should stay tight. Keep up the good work and feel free to join us down on the daily thread or stop by anytime!

1). Hold a plank position for as long as you can and add more reps or longer time as you get better.
2). Get one of those huge exercise (stability ) balls. There are a ton of core exercises you can do with them if you google it or look on YouTube. I do a plank position with my feet on the ball, then curl my knees to my chest. This really improves balance and core strength.
3). Double leg extensions
4). Yoga
Hope that helps!
Hi Rosebride!
Yep, good advice has been given. :D My upper body form is so bad when I run, I'm working on it tho. My arms cross and makes my back move too much. Your arms should act as pendulums and move forward and back without
