Have a dress I'd like to wear ----
BUT the top half is solid white.

I'm not sure why you think this would be a no no dress, it's not completely white. Is it long sleeved, short sleeved, halter style? Sleeveless or halter style you could do a shrug in black

As long as the wedding party themselves aren't going to be in black & white, I don't see a problem with it.
