What cleaning tips did you learn from your mom?

I could probably go on for a while on this subject, but the main one that sticks out is that the only way to get the sink really clean is to use an SOS pad on it. I am now addicted to shiny sinks! She was never a neat freak, but did teach me the value of having a junk drawer in the kitchen as well.

My mom used to throw a quarter of a lemon into the dishwater when she was washing dishes. Truth be told she was always more into cooking than cleaning. Must be where I get that from!!

One of the most helpful things my mom taught me was to clean up as I go. That goes for just about anything, but it especially helps when making big dinners. If you clean up as you go along, it isn't such a huge ordeal when the meal is over with.

My mom always told me that, too! I have only partially absorbed that wisdom. She also told me to start at the top of a room and do the floors last (although I always feel like the sink is the last item to tackle).

You know, my mother was OCD. She had six kids and white carpets. Cleaning was a dreadul task that we could never get right, because she was disordered and since we weren't disordered the way she was, we couldn't/wouldn't do things the way she would. So, unfortunately, for me and my sisters there has been a lot of negativity and stress around maintaining our homes. We know a lot about what we "should" do, but the negative voices in our heads took years to quiet before caring for our homes became a thing we did because we loved our homes, ourselves and our families. I'm just putting this out there, because now I'm a mother and I want to pass on to my daughter wisdom and love

So true, @hotlipps! Mental health issues can often manifest themselves in household hygeine. It's so stressful to visit someone who needs to control their space - and level of order and cleanliness - with such compulsive rigour. Makes you feel sad for them, and inevitably makes visits less welcoming.
