Our DD just started 8th grade. They get lunch included at school. Sometimes, often, it isn't very kid-friendly food. Like Balsamic Chicken Pasta Salad. Anyway, there is always salad, fruit, yogurt. This week she said the spaghetti was disgusting. Yesterday was cranberry hoisin wraps. It was the worst ever Mom! They get a snack after school too. That is usually "terrible." Often she wants to head to 7-11 for a drink/snack since she hasn't eaten enough. Not happening on my end but I'm tired of the battles. At home she is picky too. Doesn't like what I make usually and pouts about it. I am thinking this is more about control than actual food taste. We've told her her social life etc is going to be very tough if she thinks everything tastes disgusting. She is normal weight so it isn't an eating disorder. Her older brother can be selective too but will make himself something if he doesn't want what I make. Any thoughts?

I do think that some kids are much fussier eaters than others & it's really not about control. I had one of those who is 23 yrs old now. Even in college she was kind of fussy--from soph year on she lived in a sorority house where they had a cook. Instead of a cafeteria with a lot of choices, they basically had whatever he cooked for dinner & she didn't like a lot of the things. It was only gradually that she started trying new things. She didn't start eating eggs until she was in college and she will eat them now but only egg whites--she says she doesn't like the taste. She has always liked fruit but was very fussy about veggies. When she was little I felt like I could only cook chicken or pasta and there wasn't much else she would eat--got very tiring. So I think it's good for you not to go to 7-11 and have her load up on junk food--try to have snacks at home that are healthy & that she will eat. Also do you get your school lunch menus in advance (we do)? On the days that she doesn't like the lunch could she bring her lunch from home?
Ramona Mom to 2 great kids and wife to one wonderful hubby since 1990!
I think she meant frozen pizza, Hot Pockets, etc. My son was eating Hot Pockets a lot...ugh the smell! but got sick of em. Of course she wanted to try them too but didn't like the taste and gave it to the dog when I wasn't home! She doesn't like smoothies
She is ok with fruit and veg, not too much variety and it has to have basically just been picked to be pristine enough
. It isn't whole groups of food she doesn't like: more that the particular taste/preparation of an acceptable food will turn her off. Like the roast beef sandwiches at school are disgusting. The spaghetti was awful...these are things she would eat at home. One day the snack was Chex Mix. Gave that to her brother. Snack could be yogurt or cheese stick or muffin. Generally she says she doesn't eat it. We don't do a lot of typical fast food but she loves Subway for example, turkey or ham, not the meatball/cheese laden ones! If I make chicken here, some kinds are ok, but even when I made Shake n Bake, no. Loves pretty much anything with ground beef but my DH has genetic cholesterol issues so I try to limit that for all. Some days I just want to chuck all the considerations and make what I want!
