Quarter inch seam question

I am new to quilting, though been sewing for years. Am wondering if I should by a 1/4 foot or one of those strips that just sits on machine bed so I can assure even seams.

It's as easy (and much cheaper) to use a post-it note and mark your machine bed... or masking tape, or painter's tape. I've actually seen shows where they use several layers of that tape so there is an "edge" for the fabric to but up against! Most sewing plates already have markings anyway, I think, and it's easy enough to check the by doing test seams. That's how our teacher taught us --- doing test seams to see just how accurately we sewed!
And 1/4" isn't as critical as all the same... KWIM? If you are a little on the generaous side, or a little on the scant side, that's OK as along as ALL your seams are the same.
