Do you have a cold or allergies? How do you know?

I don't have either right now, thank goodness! But I can usually tell when it's an allergy rather than a cold because my eyes tend to water a lot and I get this annoying tickle in the back of my throat.
With a cold my symptoms tend to get worse over a few days but with allergies they start out strong and fierce and get better with some antihistamines.
I really can't tell so I treat both the same: lots of fluids, sudafed during the day, and benadryl at night.
