Allie in trouble

Allie and I go to the vet tomorrow morning for some tests.  All this started just a few short days ago.  Her throat is enlarged, she is coughing, choking, and having difficulty swallowing.  I also suspect she had a stroke last night and half expected that I would lose her today, as she was disoriented, could hardly stand and walk and would collapse rather than lay down.  Short night's sleep!  She is some better today but I think it was a warning.  I'll let you know what the vet finds.  It would be really great if it's just a severe allergy...

I know it's a consequence of adopting older dogs, but it's so soon since Jester died that it's a bit unsettling.  Keep us in your prayers, please.

Barbara

Hi Barbara,
Is it possible that she has something caught in her throat? (like a small pine cone or something? ) Hope all is well after the tests.... (())

Allie eats deer (and other) poop, but I've never seen her eat anything else. She's not a stickchewer or anything like that.

Beautiful picture! She's about the prettiest English Cocker I've ever seen!

Oh say, can you see?

Allie is suffering from laryngial paralysis, meaning the tissue in her larynx and vocal cords is hard and cannot expand to accommodate demands for more air or food.  So if she becomes active, her need for air increases but the opening is like breathing through a straw.  Hence the coughing and choking.

Have to run for dinner with friends, but I'll tell you more tonight!

Oh say, can you see?

Pizza and beer with friends.  Doesn't get any better!

It seems Allie had a seizure on Sunday.  I should have recognized the symptoms, as I've seen them before in my son's epileptic German Shorthair/Cattle Dog.  She was disoriented and drunklike in her movements.  This is unfortunately unrelated to the breathing issue.

Our vet warns me that cold weather is particulaly hard on dogs' breathing, so I will be sure to coat her when she goes out after the snow flies here in Michigan.  She is also getting aminophylline 200mg twice a day and that should help to open her airway.  A friend is sending Reiki.  That's about all we can do.  thanks for your concerns.
