October 2012 - Thoughts for the Day!

make sure that your kids know they exist every day.  Take some time to acknowledge them, notice them.  Snuggle with them.  Make eye contact with them.  Be with them. More importantly, play with them.  

I recently heard a story about a young boy who was devastated that his mom was more interested in spending time at the computer than spending time with him during his visits with her.  He was leaving notes, phone calls and even getting into fights on the way to school to get her attention, but that wasn't working. 

He and his therapist worked on a plan -- he made it a whole week without any incidents going to and from school.  SUCCESS!  There were still problems with mom.  The therapist knowing where this young man was in their therapy, talked about all the positive things he had done to attract her attention and how that wasn't working and kids often upped the anti by breaking the rules.  She suggested he go into the kitchen and break all the kitchen dishes on the floor to see what she would do.  This 7 yo in his brilliant wisdom responded,  "I'd rather not go down that road"! At that point, she jumped in and lit him on fire for his wisdom, self control, healthy power and determination!  I'm betting that there will be a reconnection very soon with Mom and son -- because HE knows he exists in his Dad's eyes, in this therapist's eyes and more importantly, in his own eyes and heart.
