I totally agree, and, IMO, a sewing machine can do more different things than a serger but a serger can finish seams a lot easier than a sewing machine...

I have seen a lot of cable sewing programs of late that are using the serger more and more for what we used to only use a sewing machine for. I've seen entire garments sewn with a serger on "Sewing with Nancy"  (for example, see these three episodes: http://video.wpt2.org/video/2165960214/, http://video.wpt2.org/video/2165967118/ and http://video.wpt2.org/video/2165967126/) and quilts made with a serger on Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting (According to the web site at http://www.createtv.com/CreateProgram.nsf/vLinkTitle/Fons+amp+Porters+Love+of+Quilting# They used a serger for a tee-shirt quilt in episode #1104 , a "traditional quilt being done using a serger in episode #1603, curved seams in episode #1903, and adding piping to a quilt in episode #1910)...

. So, if you have the room and $$$ for a serger, it can do more than just seams..

Sergers may be faster and do a better job on seams, but you can't replace a sewing machine with a serger.
