Crock Pot Chicken Cacciatore

3 lb. broiler-fryer chickens, cut up
3 TB butter
1 small onion, thinly sliced
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 can (16 oz.) diced tomatoes, undrained
2 cans (6 oz. ea.) tomato paste
1/3 cup green bell pepper, chopped
1 tsp. dried oregano
1 tsp. dried basil
1/2 tsp. ground black pepper
1 pinch cayenne pepper
1 bay leaf
1/4 cup dry red wine

Place chicken in the crock pot/slow cooker.
