We've spent all year talking about the books that topped all the lists: Davinci Code, Five People You Meet in Heaven, Lovely Bones, etc. So in all the hype and talk about books on the list... what are some titles or authors that got missed?

What are some of your picks for the Overlooked Books of 2004?

I think one of the underrated authors is Stephanie Gertler. Her first book was "Jimmy's Girl" which was okay, but after that I think she really took off.

"The Puzzle Bark Tree was a wonderful womans read with a mystery within it. It came out (I think) in 2002. IMHO it is her best work.

The was "Drifting" which came out in 2003. It had an interesting plot, a woamns read with a mystery within also.

This year she released "The Windmill". I really liked this one!!

As I remember all these books take place in New England.

She is to me one of those authors who make me wonder why they never make it big. I think she is as good as so many of the much publicized womens reads!

HHMMMMMMMM.........wonder why!!

Two that I just loved, now I'm not sure they were published in 2004, were Must Love Dogs by Claire Cook and Eat Cake by Jeanne Ray.

Even if they weren't published in 2004, they're definitely both worth a read!

Beneath a Marble Sky by John Shors. This is such a beautiful book about the building of the Taj Majal and the royal family in India during it's building. It has everything - a great romance, murder, intrigue, sibling feuds and plots for power. I can't say enough good things about it, and unfortunately, it's not an easy book to find. If you are lucky enough to come across a copy, you simply must read it!

Linda, have you read the others by Jeanne Ray?

I have also read "Step, Ball ,Change" another winner and "I think it was called "Julia and Romeo".

She is definitley an overlooked author!

Hi Scrappy,

You're right, Beneath a Marble Sky is not easy to find, my library has no copies of it or anything by the author, nor does my inter-library loan system.
