Vine help?

I hope this is the right place to ask this. If not perhaps someone can point me to a better place.

First, let me say that I have no experience with gardening of any kind. The closest I've ever gotten is a cactus that lived on the back of my toilet for years. I'm sure the only reason it survived so long is because it didn't need anything more than a little water every couple months.

I moved into an appartment about 3 weeks ago that is on the ground floor and has a beautiful garden. It has what I'm told is a kiwi vine (I didn't even know they grew on vines..). This vine is sending out tendrils all over the place and one of them has latched onto a nearby tree. I don't want it to grow over this tree and kill it. It's close to latching onto a big pine tree that's nearby as well. I think it's a very pretty vine but I need these tendrils to get under control. WHat can I do to control these tendrils? Can I just snip them without harming the rest of the plant? Or is there something else I should be doing with it? There's no where else for it to grow except into the trees.

You could provide a trellis or obelisk or something for it to climb. Just trim it for now.

It's already on a trellis. It's a rather large, already established vine. It was here when we moved in. It's actually latching on to the top of the small tree near it which is what is worrying me.

If it ever decides to stop raining I'll go give it a trim. I was just worried about harming the overall wellfare of the plant since I know nothing about them.

Thanks.

They are quite vigorous vines and have to be controlled. If you want more information about how to handle them, here's a good resource: http://www.homeorchardsociety.org/article/22/

I had kiwi ago that took over the side of the greenhouse, had to prune it quite often.

Thank you for the link. It sounds like my pretty little vine is going to take a nice bit of attention.. Most of what is out there doesn't need much attention.

It is a very pretty vine though. Makes a nice privacy wall between our garden and the neighbors too.
