I've never started seeds to plant in the ground at this time of year, but I think you might be able to? Like zinnias? Possibly sunflowers? Or is it too late for them? Any guidance would be much appreciated!!

Depends on where you live. If you are in So. Cal you probably can. I'm in No. Cal and it's getting cold at night already. There just would not be enough time for them to mature before it's freezing here.

August is the time to plant your winter garden though-lettuces, kale, broccoli, brussel sprouts. We also plant our garlic and onions in the fall here.

According to your profile, you live in Rhode Island. You will probably be getting a fall frost soon. It is the end of your growing season. Save your flower seeds for next May.
