Planting for Winter Interest?

Since I grow mostly annuals and vegetables, my garden looks pretty bare during the winter months. But I do fill a couple large pots on my patio with branches and greens just for some winter interest. I am wondering what the rest of you northerners do or plant or grow for winter interest in your yard and garden?

I would love to add some winter interest, but I am not sure where to start. I planted a couple bushes that my local nursery recommended, but they did not make it through the summer. They were supposed to have reddish branches in the winter. sigh

We do have some evergreens trees and bushes, but we need more!
