The TBR Pile Grows..........

Well, I was home today and about 5pm I got an irresistable urge to hit the bookstore. We have a really awesome local bookstore here. It used to be an old downtown hotel years ago. When they renovated the downtown area the building was bought and turned into a 3 story bookstore with a cafe, a papergoods store and a crystal/rock store inside. They have lots of author events and some drop-in book groups. I just love the place and could spend hours there, whether I buy anything or not. (But just try to get me out without buying something.)

So I spent the evening there and came home with just three books. A book on Gnosticism, 'In Her Shoes' by Jennifer Weiner and 'The Serpents Trail', by Sue Henry. I was looking for Janet Evanovich's first Stephanie Plum book called, 'One For The Money', but I was looking for a used one and they just had new ones, so I skipped it for now. I often go to Amazon to buy books and check the used section for books in near new condition. I can usually get one for less than $5.

At anyrate, I had just got a couple of books off my TBR pile and felt pretty good about it and now I have 3 more to add. Hi, my name's Celeste and I'm a bookaholic........

I really love that bookstore. I have such an affinity for most any bookstore. They seem to fill me with a calm, peaceful sense of tranquility. There is one in Portland, Oregon that used to be the largest bookstore east of the Mississippi. A large old building several stories high, it requires a map to find your way around. Different genre's are located in their own 'room'. Imagine a whole room full of science fiction books!

I've always been interested in different religions and have studied metaphysical philosophies for 25 years or more. Gnostism is the opposite of agnosticism. An agnostic doesn't believe in God, based on lack of knowledge or evidence of his existence. A gnostic believes in God and salvation, based on knowledge. I'm not sure how I feel about it, but here is a website where you could read about it: http://www.ourladyswarriors.org/dissent/defgnost.html

I haven't read the Sue Henry book yet. I will get to it soon, though. My sister and her husband just travelled to Alaska last spring and they loved it. They also do some motorhome travelling and the book is right up her alley. It is about a woman who is about 65 and she and her little Dachshund take off to see the lower 48 in her motorhome. They get all caught up in a mystery. It looks like fun.

That would be Powell Book in Portland. It is a full city block. And as far as I know it still is the largest bookstore in the country not just west (which is, I'm sure what you meant to say) of the Mississippi. I grew up near a Portland suburb and I love Powell's. They also have several satelite specialty stores. There is a branch at the airport, a children's bookstore, a technical bookstore, and my favourite, a travel bookstore.

Hi Julie,

Where did you live in Portland?

I am so jealous!!! I'm sick of Borders and while I love overstock.com, there's no opportunity for a book to call out to you as you wander the aisles. I miss that bit of divine inspiration with online shopping. The only cool bookstores we have are children's. Anybody wanna open a bookstore with me in Virginia?!

I lived in Gresham and both my parents still do so I visit at least once a year. It's too bad you never went to Powell's it's fabulous. They have a great website that you can order from too. The light rail is of course complete and has been been doubled in size by expansion to Beaverton. It also has a spur to the airport now which is very convienent. Did you ever go to Saturday market?
