"To Borrow or To Purchase"

Happy Friday All,

I was reading a message where Maggie said she liked the Jimmy Buffet book so she would purchase it for the shelf. So I thought it might be a good thread. What makes you decide to buy a book rather than borrow from the library or a friend.

A friend of mine just offered to give me "Vanishing Acts" to read. I declined because I always purchase Jodi Picoult books so I can share them. If I think I will really like a book, I buy it. Of course I've been stuck with many a dud!!!! Sue

I always buy books, too many books!! :) But seriously, if it turns out that I don't like them, there are several used book stores in my area that I can trade it in for credit at, and if I like the book I will guaranteed reread it many times, so...it just seems sensible for me to buy...(I should def. buy LESS books though)

My local library is the source of 95% of my books.

Great thread:)

I have bought less books in the most recent years. Now I tend to buy only those books that are part of a continuing set or series that I'm reading. I also will buy a paperback that catches my attention and I'm sure it's commercial enugh that a library probably wouldn't have it. Then there are the books that make an impression on me in some way. I have a book club that tempts me on a regular basis but a lot of the books I then donate to the library. My shlef space just isn't what it used to be.

I've only bought a few fiction books, mostly I buy any reference ones I want to keep.

Most of my books I get from the annual library book sale, church flea markets, yard sales or I borrow from the library to read.

I love to buy books and will hang onto the ones that I really like. Often I will pass them along to friends or family. My sister, my son and daughter are all readers, so we all share books back and forth. Books that mean a lot to me I will buy in hardbound. I don't normally reread books, but for some reason, I just want books around me. One of my dreams is to get moved to a larger place and have a library room that I can have floor to ceiling bookshelves built and have a cozy wingback chair to spend my reading

I get almost all of the books I read lately from the library or from friends/co-workers. I'm actually in a quandary right now because I have a Barnes & Noble gift card that I've had since my birthday in October and I'm trying to decide what to buy with it. I waited until after Christmas to use it because I was going to buy two knitting books that I wanted with it, but I ended up getting those for Christmas. So, now I don't know what to get. I went and browsed a couple of times, but all of the books that interested me didn't necessarily seem like "buy me" books and I figured I could just get them from the library. We have a really good library and they're part of a library consortium and if my library doesn't have a book they'll get it from one of the other member libraries. I've yet to find a book I want to read that I wasn't able to get from the library.

I think the last book I purchased was "The DaVince Code" because I didn't want to wait for it from the library (there was a huge waiting list) and I had a gift card from Christmas to buy it with. I might get a book on writing or some other kind of reference book, I guess.

There are a few truly favorite writers whose books I buy in hardback almost as soon as they're out. That's Robert Crais, Michael Connelly and James Lee Burke. As for other books, it will depend if it's someone I've read before and heard ahead of time how good the novel may be. If the storyline sounds original or just makes me feel I've gotta have it (and able to financially make the purchase), it gets done. It's just the thought I've GOT to own that particular book and stays in the back of my mind till the thing is setting on the bookshelf at home! LOL!
