Wow, such a HARD question to answer! We have renovated four kitchens in the past 8 years and have had different cabinets each time. To me, I try to make them fit a) with the style of the house and b) with my budget.
Right now we're in a cabin style home in the mountains and have medium wood cabinets. In a house we lived in years ago right in the city, we recovered our cabinets with sheet metal, which was really trendy.
It's always fun to re-do a kitchen!
