When you set out to do a project you've never done before, how do you learn how?

I just wing it - I learn by doing.
I surf online for directions.
I follow the advice of home-improvement books and magazines.
I ask a friend or family member to tell me how to do it.
I start the job, but I often get a pro to finish it.
Some combination of the above (specify)
I ALWAYS hire a pro from the get-go.

It really depends what needs to be done, but I do look online for information so that I know how complicated or easy it is. When it's better to go with a pro, that's what I do.

I PROBABLY should have clicked on family and friends for advice but it's really more like hiring pros (Dh has quite a pool of professional friends: a contractor who has done all of our major remodels, a electrician, a plumber and a painter who help with small repairs), DH is a semi-pro painter who also can do electrical repairs and plumbing repairs if they aren't too complicated; and Dh's brother is a professional roofer...
