Taking a break from "Reading Lolita in Tehran" (see discussion thread), I reread an old paperback of "thrillers" from the 20's & '30's edited by Alfred Hitchcock's.

I'm re-reading Steve Hamilton's "A Cold Day In Paradise" and starting Ellis Weiner's second Pete Ingalls novel "The Big Boat to Bye Bye". The latter is a private eye in NYC whose character was first a bookstore owner but got konked on the head and from then on has thought himself a P.I. His secretary is an actress waiting for that big break but meanwhile puts up with Ingalls whose dialogue will leave you wide-eyed, jaw dropping and laughing at the same time. He dresses like Phillip Marlowe, too. If you wanna a National Lampoon view of the world of the private eye, Ellis Weiner is the right author to read.

I'm still reading "Will in the World: How Shakespeare Became Shakespeare" It explores how his life influenced the plays. Alot of it is speculation since we know so little about his life but the author is up front about that and it is very interesting,

I just started Body Double by Tess Gerritsen. Can you imagine watching as someone who could be you is autopsied right in front of you? PAthologist Maura Isles is shocked to come home from Paris and find a woman who could be her twin shot to death practically on her doorstep. Can't wait to see what twists and turns this one holds but already I'm intrigued.

As you already know Terri, I recently got a library card to get my hands on the many unread titles by Richard Laymon they have stacked away there.

I got a call from my library yesterday letting me know that my reserve was in. I haven't started it yet, but it's Sue Monk Kidd's_The mermaid chair_. I also picked up _Loud and Clear_by Anna Quindlen (non-fic) and _When Will Jesus bring the porkchops_ (humor) by George Carlin.

On lunch I usually read YA stuff, but last week I started _The beekeeper's apprentice_by Laurie R. King. It's about a teen girl in the 1920's who befriends a retired Sherlock Holmes and learns all his detective skills. It got quite good reviews when it was published a few years ago.

I've just started The Forgotten Man by Robert Crais. A man is murdered in an alley near Skid Row and tells the police officer he's looking for his son, Elvis Cole. Elvis has never met his father. The jacket cover says things start to get crazy as Elvis tries to figure out who this man was. Looking forward to reading it further!! I just finished Lavender Lies by Susan Wittig Albert. The latest for me in the China Bayles series. I was glad to read what happened at the end - I won't say so as not to spoil for anyone that hasn't read that far in the series. I wasn't sure that was ever going to happen!! Gae

Hi Teri,

I just finished reading "Baker Towers" by Jennifer Haigh. It's the story of a family in a western Pennsylvania mining town. It was a very enjoyable read!!! I just started "The Kite Runner". So far, so good! Sue
