Getting the Most out of Reading

After having read some posts this morning it seems lots of people have too many books and not enough time. So how about sharing some ways to try and make the reading pile a little lighter. How do you get in your reading time and keep up with day to day activities?

One suggestion I made is Books on Tape or CD. Anyone listen to their favorite book while walking with the walkman?

I used to struggle with that myself. MOST days I'm pretty good about getting done what needs to be done before I read. Just try to set up a routine for yourself. Tell yourself that if you don't get this, this, and this done before this time then you won't have time to read. Get it?

I watch a bunch of toddlers in my home and after lunch I try to get them all to lay down for naps at the same time. Well if I don't get some cleaning, laundry, and some other things done before lunch then I'll have to do it while the kiddies are napping and then I won't have time to read. So I make sure at 10:30 I start doing whatever needs to be done.

Also, make it known to your family or whomever that at a certain time of the day you want time to yourself to read. My family knows that at 7 pm I go to my room for atleast 30 minutes to read. Again, I have to make sure that the dinner mess is cleaned up and that my son's homeowrk is done before I can sit down at 7 to read.

I agree that books on cd are WONDERFUL while walking or exercising. Even when doing housework.

Approx. five years ago I realized my housekeeping & cleaning standards were really not mine -- they were my Mom's!

Did I call you Teri on my last post? Oh dear now I am befuddled!! Not too worry. I'm counting on you to understand if I goofed! When I have a good book to read, I manage to find the time. Before I retired & took care of my 3 children (born in 3 years! LOL)had a wonderful career, & ran a 13 room home I found any way I could to read. I stayed up all nite to finish "A Thousand Days" by Manchester (?) about John F. Kennedy & cried myself silly. I'd read when the kids napped, while the washing machine filled, while supper cooked....then I retired & I can read any old time I please. One of my children is a voracious reader of all kinds of books. (He recommended Under the Banner of Heaven, a must read for all)& also turned me on to Lawrence Block. But I digress....you'll all love retirement. dee
