Sure am! I just finished ordering my copies on-line...also ordered Empire Falls by Richard Russo (saw the HBO movie this past weekend and loved it), and pre-ordered Harry Potter #6. Can't wait to get my books!

I'm so busy this summer, I have a feeling I'll either fall behind Oprah's schedule, or pull a cram session in mid-August! lol

I probably will, at some point, but have so many other books to read right now, they're not high on my list

I cannot believe she chose Faulkner. I read two of the three books for AP English in high school. He is one intense and weird author. His books are full of so much symbolism that I couldn't imagine reading them without being able to discuss them at the same time.

AP=advanced placement. Advanced placement classes are college level courses taught at the high school level. At the end of the class, students take an exam and they get a score of 1-5 (I think, it's been a long time) If you score a 3 or better, then you are granted 3 college level credits in whatever class it is that you took. I scored a 2 on my exam so I got 3 general credits, not English credits, but it still counted towards my graduation credits.
That's probably more than you ever wanted to know! LOL! Anyone feel free to correct me. I graduated a loooooooooong time ago and my oldest is only a freshman in HS so she's still too young for AP.

Faulkner is weird and intense because of the subject matter of some of his books. _As I lay dying_ is about the death of a family matriarch. Her entire death and burial is long and drawn out and macabre. The family transports the body back to her home town via wagon and all sorts of strange stuff happens. There is a lot of symbolism in his books that I think are too hard for the average person to get. If you read some of the reviews of this books, you will see what I mean. Some of the stuff in his books is just bizarre. Read it and you'll see.

I also read Faulkner for my AP English class in high school and didn't care much for him. I was so excited for the Oprah Book Club pick was dissapointed when it was Faulkner. He is an amazing author and his books deserve to be classics but I don't think I will follow along this summer as I have so many books I really want to read and Faulkner just isn't it.

Monica,

I want to thank you for the info on Faulkner. I LOVE Oprah's book club and have read most of her selections. But I think I will take your advice and read some of the books I think I will enjoy. I spent last summer reading "Anna Karenina". Although I enjoyed the story, I had a hard time with it. Thanks again, Sue

It's been many years since I read Faulkner & he is a brillant writer. I may try again to see how I feel now. He is intense & hard to get sometimes. I read him in American Lit in college & the prof (thank goodness) was excellent explaining what we were reading! LOL. Anyway, I think reading the classics is really great, but you do need plenty of time for them, IMHO. Also I wish Oprah would find some "light" things to read. dee
