Has anyone else gone to see the new movie with Johnny Depp? Don't get me wrong I like Johnny Depp.. I really do. What I don't like is when Hollywood feels the need to deviate from the story. I think the book is a stand alone all it's own and makes for a wonderful movie... so why mess with it? IT was definitely a darker version of the Gene Wilder movie but the special effects were really great- when Violet turns well violet it is great!

Has anyone else seen it and have an oppinion?

Hi Maggie! I saw it last week with the kids. I'm still not sure what I thought of it. Johnny Depp's character was just so weird. I didn't understand his portrayal of Willie Wonka at all. He was so creepy. I did however love all the kids. I agree the special effects were very good. I just loved Gene Wilder in the last movie and I'm Depp didn't want to play Wonka just like Wilder did, but I wish he had been a little different.
My kids really liked it.

Hmm, we loved it because it WAS closer to the book than the Gene Wilder version!

The way he looks in the previews scare the hell out of me. I don't think I could sit thru 2 hrs of him.

I haven't seen it, but I read a review in which the reviewer said that they thought that Depp modeled Wonka after Michael Jackson. After that review, I'm not sure I want to see it. Michael Jackson is just WAY too scary for me!

I can't say about the book because I haven't read it but we enjoyed it.

I read an interview with Johnny himself, and HE said he modeled his Willy Wonka after a game show host/car salesman type of guy.

Honestly, I think it was probably in reference to the voice he used in the movie and the make up he wore (I haven't seen the movie, so I couldn't actually tell you why the comparison was made).

I really wasn't trying to offend, sorry if you took it that way.

without having read any reviews on the movie until after I'd seen it, that was who I thought Depp was trying to base his portrayel on. The kids asked me what I thought as we were walking out, and I told them I wasn't sure if I liked it and couldn't figure out why Wonka was so much like Michael Jackson. As I said, there were a lot of things about the movie that were great, just not Depp (and I like him in everything else!)

I also heard a movie reviewer say Depp's Willy Wonka reminded him of a cross between Michael Jackson and Marilyn Manson ~yikes~!

The heat is keeping me inside my house, but I *will* get out this week and see it on the large screen!
