for me it was Carolyn Keene (which my mom got me into) & Beverly Cleary & Judy Blume - my mom is collecting all the old Nancy Drew ones now & I still have all my old Cleary & Blume books on my bookshelf :-)
All these old books, so many memories! I can't remember what started me on reading, I have been told that the first book I "read" was Caps for Sale (okay, it was probably more like I recited the book, but I guess as a child I loved that story). I remember reading the Anne of Green Gables series, Little House on the Prarie and loving My Antonia. It's been so long since I thought of any of these books.
Like most everyone else, I don't remember specifically what got me hooked on reading, I just remember always reading. I read the Carolyn Keene series and still have those old books (copyrighted from late 50's). I read a lot of horse stories as well. Gae
When i was in the 2nd grade, I remember the librarian read us, How To Eat Fried Worms. I've been hooked on stories ever since. There may have been ones before this one but ,Where The Red Fern Grows, was the first book I remember falling in love with.
The first three in the series are great, awesome, excellent! The next few are good too. After that they get very serialized and even other people start writing them, so, I wouldn't strongly recommend those...
I read the first Elsie Dinsmore book when I was a little girl and honestly, I didn't like it at all! I thought it was horrible and sad. Elsie seemed like such a sweet angel to me and her father like a total monster, I think I actually cried a few times when I read it!
I LOVED the Little House books way-back-when, I can't believe I left those off my list! My grandma bought me two big books of fairy tales, one by Hans Christian Andersen and one by the Brothers Grimm, and I read all those too---they were pretty much the original versions, which I have to say can be pretty freaky. The most amazing book of fairy tales I've ever read was the Little Golden Book of Fairy Tales--the illustrations alone are mind-blowing.
I struggled with reading for a long time as a child. The Great Brain series by John Fitzgerald was practically a gift from the Gods. I had never before found a book that actually interested me. It was a stretch for me to read the books, but I loved them so I kept on trying. Fortunately there are 7 books in the series and by the time I finished all 7, I was a pretty decent reader :)
After that, I went on to enjoy the Chronicles of Narnia :)
