Two books--Cast in Shadow by Michelle Sagara and Child of Venus by Pamela Sargent. Both, sad to say, somewhat mediocre. :(

I actually finished Drowning Ruth last night (I only had 10 pages left to read when I had to get off at my train stop - ACK!!! SO FRUSTRATING!!!). Anyway, I thought it was a strange book. I don't know how I feel about it to be honest. I didn't love it, but I defintely didn't hate it. I found it difficult at times because it was told in the perspective of a couple of different characters (Ruth and her Aunt Amanda mostly and they kind of switched back and forth).

Maybe it's the pregnancy brain that I'm having that made it confusing to me. I will say that it was one of the few books that I have recently read that didn't feel rushed at the end and that was nice. The last few books I've read seemed like the author thought the book was getting too long and decided to just end it without any real closure to anything. If nothing else, it was really interesting to read about the 1930s and 40s and how life (and social taboos) are so different today.

I really thought that the first story in Holidays on Ice was very funny (definitely my sarcastic and warped sense of humor). It would have been my ultimate NIGHTMARE to have to work as an elf at Macy's during Christmastime. I even thought that the second story was funny in a sick kind of way, but after those two stories, he kind of lost me. Maybe I'll give another one of his books a try. My brother says that most of his stuff is like the first story and if it is, I'll definitely give it a go. Do you agree with my brother that most of his stuff is like that, not quite so dark but more on the sarcastic side?

Thanks for your input,

Sarenna

I just finished Bloodlines by Jan Burke. Really great! She starts the book way in the past, before Irene Kelly (her heroine/main character) was even around. Then the book starts coming into the future and ends with quite a twist. She did a really good one this time in my opinion. I also finally decided to see if I could read two books at at time (something I usually never do). So I have a book that I read while at work, and one I'm reading at home. The book I'm reading at home right now a coworker loaned me. It's called "The Bear's Embrace" by Patricia Van Tighen. It's the true story of how Patricia and her husband were mauled by a grizzly bear while hiking in Canada and about her recooperation process. Right now I'm where she's still at the hospital. Has been there for about 4 weeks. She will never be able to use her left eye again and just had surgery to have muscle removed from her buttocks to be put in the back of her skull. Kind of gross I know, but she writes really well that it's not too graphic to read. And, now that I finished Bloodlines, I'm about to start "Sugar Skull" by Denise Hamilton. Her character is a journalist for the Los Angeles Times. Her first book was very good, so this is the next in her series. Gae

Weighing in on 'Practical Magic'!! I read this book quite a few years ago and I loved it! It is one of her best books. Alice Hoffman is one of those authors that you have to get used to. Not a lot of high action, but she has a beautiful writing style and her character development makes me feel like I know these people.

I started 'Summer Sisters' by Judy Blume last night and I love it! I wish she had a lot more adult literature. She really does have her finger on the pulse of women and girls. Are her other adult stories good? 'Smart Women'?

I also have one other book going, but I will finish the other one first before I get back to it. 'In Her Shoes', by Jennifer Weiner. Hard for me to relate to her writing style, but I will finish it.

Celeste ~

Judy Blume is the only author who has had more than one book selected as Group Read of the Month here at ABC.

Celest,

I have to agree with you on wishing Judy Blume had more adult books. I've read all three of hers and just loved them. Summer Sisters was the first one I read, and I just loved it. Wifey was hilarious! kind of dark comedy i would say. It made laugh out loud sometimes, which I don't do often when reading. Smart Women was good also.

YaYas in Bloom by Rebecca Wells - the 3rd book about the Ya Yas of Thornton, LA. So far, it is really good. I love the characters in these stories and it is great to hang out with them some more :)

I did a quick search for Summer Sisters, got 25 results, but none seem to be the discussion questions
